Does your baby have baby acne?

Acne is a skin condition that can affect people of every background, each gender, and even every age. While most people who suffer from acne experience their first pimples around age 13, some people have acne as babies. Did you know that baby's can have acne? Baby acne is more common then you would think. Many new parents are alarmed by baby acne. Not to worry, baby acne is a normal facet of life.

So what is baby acne exactly?

Is it the same type of acne as a teenager or adult has to deal with? No, not exactly. Baby acne comes in the form of small red bumps. Baby acne can also appear as whiteheads. However, the acne is not like teen and adult acne. You don't have to worry about your baby getting pock marks from this type of acne. At this age you have to worry more about your baby getting scars from picking chicken pox then from baby acne.

Many parents wonder if their baby will have acne at infancy and in their teen years as well. Parents can rest easy in that baby acne usually clears up when your baby is between four to six months in age. If your baby still has acne after six months of age then you should consult your Pediatrician. Your baby may need to be evaluated to make sure it is not another type of skin condition or even a rash.
Many parents also wonder if they should treat baby acne in the same manner that they treat teen and adult acne. Teen and adult acne surface for a different reason and are a different type of acne in general. Therefore, baby acne should not be treated with soap, creams, or lotions. Instead, simply cleanse your baby's face with water once a day. Do not use soaps or lotions because these items can actually make the baby acne worse.

If your baby has bothersome baby acne then you can consult your doctor for guidance. Your doctor may prescribe a skin medicine specifically geared for your baby's skin. Don't ever use your own medicine on your baby as it may be dangerous. Also try to use detergents such as Dreft that are easy on the skin. Sometimes baby acne is acerbated by skin allergies. So using allergen free products is your best bet.

What is the cause of baby acne?

In general, baby acne stems from the transfer of hormones between the mother and baby right before birth. These hormones prompt the oil glands to produce oil. This oil then causes the baby acne. While this is the generally accepted cause, the exact cause of baby acne is still being researched.

If you are not quite sure if your baby might have acne then you can always consult your doctor. They will help you monitor the condition especially if it does not clear up by six months of age. If your baby suffers from baby acne then know that you are not alone. Your baby's acne will eventually go away leaving clear skin.
